Defining Custom Bank Select Methods

Using Logic 8

Roland V-Synth GT Synthesizer
Roland's original V-Synth set a new standard in expressive synthesis and sound design. It won awards and acclaim around the world, as it forever changed the way sounds were created and performed. But just when you thought V-Synth technology had reached its peak, Roland raised the bar even higher with the new flagship V-Synth GT! This unique instrument injects the V-Synth's famous Elastic Audio Synthesis engine with revolutionary Articulative Phrase Synthesis technology. Its expression and realism is unprecedented, as is its ability to make never-before-heard sounds.

I am going to show you how you get patchnames into Logic from your hardware synth.  I am going to use the V-Synth GT as an example.  Those of you who own the V-synth GT will find everything you need here to get your V-synth patchnames into Logic.  If you are trying to get the names from another synth and define its bank select method, the information here will be helpful.  You need to get a name list in TXT format and you need to know the MSB and LSB for the bank select method, which you will find in your synth's manual.

The V-synth does not follow convention  of control 32, 0, 0; control 32, 0, 1 as do many synths

It follows the following for the definition of its 4 banks:

Bank 0: Control 0, 87 (MSB=87)

Bank 0: Control 32, 0 (LSB=0)

Bank 1: Control 0, 87  (MSB=87)

Bank 1: Control 32, 1  (LSB=1)

Bank 2: Control 0, 87  (MSB=87)

Bank 2: Control 32, 2  (LSB=2)

Bank 3: Control 0, 87  (MSB=87)

Bank 3: Control 32, 3  (LSB=3)

Note:  if you were doing this in Cubase you would use 14 bit codes 11136 to 11139.  How did I get that? Simple!  The formula is MSB x 128 + LSB or in the case of the V-Synth GT (and XT) 87x128+0=11136.

Go to the environment.

Create a Multi Instrument, call it V-Synth GT, and click the box to enable channel 1.  It should look like this:

Multiinstrument

Figure 1

Highlight the multi-instrument with your mouse.  Go to the OPTIONS menu in the environment and click Define Custom Bank Messages...

A box will open and you should make it look like this:

Logic Custom Bank Select

Figure 2

Now test this configuration by sending bank and program change commands from Logic.  Double click on the name of the synth in the inspector so the patchname box opens up.  You should be able to access all 512 patches.  In the Bank Message field tick the menu item "Custom Bank Messages" as shown in figure 3

Now lets add the names:

In Roland's PDF help files for the V-synth GT, you will find all the patch lists.  You need to copy and paste the names in that PDF to a .TXT file.  Excel and Word Files also work.

At the far right you see a drop down menu called OPTIONS.

Copy the first 128 names in your TXT file and paste them into Logic's Patch name box using the "Paste all names" function.   Then go to Bank 2 and paste in the next 128 names.  OK, you should be able to figure out the rest.

In the end, your patch box should look like this:

Logic Patch Name window

Figure 3

Now wasn't that easy?

The following are from Roland's new OS 2.0 for the V-Synth GT.  The names of course differ for the factory bank in V-synth GT 1.0 as they do in the original V-synth and V-synth XT.  The Bank select codes will be the same for the V-synth GT and XT.  You kind find the helpful PDF on the RolandClan site
